These are things never mentioned by Kartik when the topic of NBC and the premier league is a focus. Like many soccer followers on this site, Kartik jumps around and tries to watch as many matches from different euro leagues as possible. What he then misses, is what every viewer that focuses on EPL sees. On the podcast from a couple of weeks ago, Kartik was very positive about the transfer deadline day coverage, and watched it practically all day long.
Thank you Chris. Admittedly, I missed the last couple of podcasts, so I appreciate that feedback. Disco George. Yes I did. Perhaps that was a slight over exaggeration as I was typing quickly my thoughts. The point I was attempting to make should be clear however. Love your profile name btw. Money will talk, as usual.
Especially in the times we are in of a pandemic, economic uncertainty and industry shifts. Know more price increases are on the way in coming years. Carefully sticking my toe into this comment stream and trying to offer a simple opinion of what may matter to the EPL and how that may influence where the rights go. Unless we are privy of the replies from interested parties bidding for the rights, everything is speculation or hopeful wishes.
EPL wants to increase their profits. However since the EPL investigated years ago into their own DTC service, it looks like they place a high value on streaming. The dilemma how to settle this problem requires a drastic step perhaps equivalent to ripping of the band aid from the festering wound of loosing cable subscribers.
However that may change in But an indication of where things may be heading. Hans I agree — EPL is testing the waters with streaming because they know that is how the model will evolve. They stated that every single EPL game will be on streaming and the announcer kept saying during the match, how the future has arrived and this is the new way of experiencing all the great Disney sports properties.
Regardless of who gets the rights, I believe all games will be on streaming starting next season. His quote actually supports what Comcast is doing right now with the PL, Comcast is strategically using NBC and USA for their promotional capabilities and funneling viewers to their streaming platform for value-added viewing experiences.
Your last comment about people following a specific league despite the provider carrying it may be true, certainly seems so for some soccer fans that have commented here on this site — when they cannot obtain what they want so readily at a price point they are willing to pay.
That said, despite all the criticisms aimed at NBC for things mentioned by commenters here over the last couple of years, I do love their coverage of the EPL on match days and the priority they give to all 20 clubs. But who knows. I want all games on streaming, not necessarily a change in the provider.
But this seems less likely to me as they are antiquated. I would gladly subscribe to Peacock if they showed all games live and added some great of the content that NBCUniversal has. Today, almost any game is available for cheap and legal viewing, and finding the score is as easy as clicking a button. ESPN is not the only reason for that, but they are a cornerstone of the story. That was an excellent response. Always two views to everything and plenty of interpretation. I really resent people trying to remove matches to make you pay extra for what you were already getting!
Case in point: Sunday the 28th, there are no matches on regular cable TV! Pay extra and you can see them! The more they take away, the more fans they will lose! When she tells you a massive game is on Peacock Rebecca Lowe reminds of the song about local news where the anchorwoman can tell you about the plane crash with a twinkle in her eye!
Great Aston Villa win on 5th December However the disallowed goal at about 45 minutes probably should have been allowed. Not consistent rules. What do the EPL commentators think about these inconsistent rule applications?
Rebecca Lowe and friends should have a thought or two about this. Roger, rewatched the Newcastle goal you are talking about on the Peacock highlights and I think the two situations are different rather than inconsistent. Granted it was a just for a split second but I can understand why the VAR determined Schmeichel technically had possession.
What Nick Pope did was grab the ball high in the air and then he came down on a player Schar and that act, the landing if you will, dislodged the ball, putting it back in play. Schar had his back turned, he was actually barged into from behind first by Tarkowski and was falling forward a bit as a result. Yes Pope had possession for a split second while he was in the air but I suspect VAR thought it was his own actions, his leap and lunge forward, that caused him to then lose the ball as he came down on top of Schar and Tarkowski.
Callum Wilson was then the quickest to react. If Schar was more active, if he was facing Pope or jumped up into Pope, then I bet the goal would not have stood. I also suspect a good goalie coach would have advised to punch the ball away in that much traffic.
They should have also looked at a full-speed replay, which I think is clear that Schmeichel never had control no matter how generously the text is interpreted.
Refs too often fixate on stills and super-slow-motions and lose sight of context. It was compounded by horrible explanations. There is apparently an exception to the control rule that applies when the goalie makes a save and gives up a rebound. NBC declared at halftime that Michael Oliver got it wrong and should have applied the exception, then the Premier League said the exception did not apply even though there was a save and rebound.
Does not inspire confidence. Does anyone understand the rationale behind NBC replays on Peacock being delayed until the next day? For those on the West Coast it means having to get up before 7am or earlier to watch Sat games, and sometimes before 6am on Sundays. Perhaps it is to protect other rights holders in different time zones? This is a legitimate complaint, the earliest games should never be only on Peacock.
Period, full stop. Two things might mitigate this for you:. The EPL may decide that this is an additional factor if two bids are very close. But this argument has raged on the WST site between cablers and streamers for awhile now and it will only be settled in the future perhaps in a year or two or after a season ends to give a reason why to change the broadcast without loosing face.
I can imagine that for Peacock in this case is the bottom line, profit, which means paying subscriber numbers and only Comcast knows that. But since they are also an Internet Access provider other decisions may factor in. Until the suits in the decision making offices will act, expect that the streaming services will publish increase of subscribers without independent verification.
However Peacock of all the major streaming services has the least amount of paying premium subscribers. You can always find that the matches are available for download and Google is your friend here.
If a game is on Peacock originally, the replay is available almost immediately after the game ends. Also, it seems that live DVR controls are becoming more ubiquitous for Peacock, which is a major improvement. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. Oh good, the nonsense with top matches like North London derby on Peacock is continuing. It seems that Peacock has really stepped up for the next short future their game. Full winter Olympics and most marquee games for the next 2 wks, which seems to be the period of their strategy.
Their strategy resembles a pendulum. With no NHL players the hockey can be ignored again just like in Only ones that were live on USA Network are then available 24 hours later on demand. The rest are live on Peacock. Which lately… have been scheduling more marquee profile matches live as you pointed out. They only offer all their matches on their streaming app and CBS maybe airs one Serie A match a week or a CL match on their cable network later and I am not even sure if they do air those few matches live on their cable network.
It breaks the bank for no one. It holds no pattern of predictability at this point. That can be frustrating for some for sure. The strategy is more live matches on Peacock. Before they would air live matches simultaneously on two cable networks i. JP I really doubt that. Makes no sense to carry as a CBS Sports exclusive property. You can watch live races on youtube in countries with no TV coverage, so, CBS sports is what is preventing people from watching it.
But never mind — I have limited interest in spec racing even though they claim the contrary. No other Euro league is on network, cable and streaming week in and week out. The PL is special, commands much higher rights fees and attention.
What is live on Peacock is a bargain. Maybe by next season we can even expect all PL matches to be live on Peacock, look how Comcast is handling the Olympics on Peacock this time, in theory it has done a complete about face compared to last time, every event live, every event available for reply on demand upon completion, no matter what may be shown on network or cable. Nothing held back sounds too good to be true but what if it turns out be as amazing as they make it seem?
Bodes well for the PL. I am not paying attention?? See the responses after yours and above this one. They covered it. Educate yourself. However I am just a customer like yourself and cannot help you there. Go figure. Anti Comcast Cabal here enjoying the dig analysts take at the cable providers.
From the NY Times:. Old habits die hard. But technology can change entrenched ways of doing things slowly and then very quickly. As recently as a decade ago, nearly all Americans — more than 85 percent of U. I am just pointing out the reality of what is going on. There are always two sides. You seem to only quote from articles that bring attention to one side. Taking digs like that, though, is such low hanging fruit. In that same article, a little later on from the quote you pulled, is something much more interesting:.
For now, Americans spend a majority of their TV time watching conventional television rather than streaming video. Streaming is also a tough business. Even shameless pirates have to pay the Comcast piper unless they live in an area with real high speed internet competition. But even that could be still 5 years away. An ex president of ESPN was on the Andrew Marchand and Steve Ourand podcast about a month ago discussing this very thing, he said it will happen within 5 years and quicker than we think, one host agreed, one host disagreed.
A good listen, the guys name is Steve Bornstein, very smart, very engaging and totally plugged in. Episode 10 from Dec. You should be advocating for more competition. No wonder Comcast seems to think we are all morons. Ra Yes… you are so brilliant and so many of us are morons.
More of your repeated senseless editorial. SteveK It is quite humorous how Hans always cherry picks stuff from articles he quotes from. Like I said, always just points out the one side of things. Extremely subjective. Not providing the whole story that defines the reality.
I will quote yet once again a very astute comment made by greg awhile back… and will keep quoting it as necessary. One comes through a wire attached to your TV, the other from a wire attached to a router. Youtube TV and Hulu only have about 3 million subscribers each. The numbers are declining and declining quite rapidly. I think you are also mistaken about the revenues a company like Comcast is making when people cut the cord. How many people do you think are going to hang on to an expensive cable bill to see an EPL team play every other week?
I know because everyone I know cut cable and found otherways to watch for free. I would argue if they put them all on Peacock, they would make more revenue through Peacock subscriptions than they are ever hoping to make on retained cable subscribers who are quitting in droves anyway. El Classico on now and then I will multicast it with Tottenham v.
But there is no way on earth NBC could afford to put Norwich v. If true, that is interesting. See my comments above about what it will probably look like as it all shifts to all streaming. No other provider comes anywhere near close to that. So if you have an option to go cheaper than a traditional cable company provides like Spectrum, good for you. Tried on Apple TV and Shield, and both looked very smooth.
I even switched between this game and ones on paramount plus and ESPN plus just to compare as both the latter ones are 60fps platform. Anybody else had the same observation? Michael F — Comcast is the only gigabit provider in my area and I call them every year on Xmas day to argue with someone in the Philippines in order to get deals the US based reps refuse to give me.
That said, my neighbour has T-mobile home internet and he seems pleased with it, and I have a relative in Europe who is in the Starlink beta and it actually works. I can already use my phone and travel router to get wireless internet for the whole house. Also almost no one really needs gigabit at this point. I only have it because its the only one with 35mbps upload speeds on Comcast.
I have been getting actual Mbps on my Gigabit. That being said, my day peak usage was only 80mbps, but upload speed and latency make a huge difference to me when working on large files on Office Typical Comcast, their routers broadcast some public wifi using your internet by default so Comcast is pushing their own stuff. To get free Peacock I literally went to the store, got a flex, signed up for Peacock and then handed it back. Every time I deal with them I feel like Larry David.
Ra — I actually get a little over mbps the plan is mbps , but this is just on speed tests. That is very typical with how a cable company works.
They never offered that on the phone before when I called to tell them of my intentions to drop cable tv. Only when I make the trip to the store with cable box in hand. I signed up immediately for a live tv stream service. To have the convenience of your content on any device wherever you go, unlimited DVR cloud capabilities and features and no additional hardware… is so much better. If there were other gigabyte internet options in my area, I would certainly play the leverage in negotiations between them.
And I am not in the boonies. Just 20 miles away from the nearest city. When moving to a new home in How fantastic that decision was in view of the pandemic. Main reason for switching was because those greedy bastards started to mess with capping the monthly download quota. They are the epitome of a trashy business. I have many times mentioned before Comcrap should get out of the media business and concentrate on the ISP business which would make their stock pop.
But then we are talking big egos here that will not listen to wall street, hedgefund owners and stock holders. Best quote of so far. Hans I no longer have a landline, but I would bet that a good many households still do. Glad you are so easily amused.
No different than the necessity of requiring high speed internet service from the same companies who provide cable TV, although I am with a live TV stream service for that. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Check our help guide for more info.
